Knee pain inside is very common in people of all ages ( 1 ). It may be started suddenly often after an exercise or injury. It also might be begun as mild discomfort, then slowly get worse.

Knee Pain Reasons

 

Knee pain can have different reasons. Overweight people have a greater risk of knee problems. Overusing your knee could be triggered by knee problems that are caused pain. If you or your family members have a history of arthritis, it could also cause knee pain.

Some knee pain Causes are:

  • Arthritis. Including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, and gout.
  • Baker cyst. A fluid-filled swelling behind the knee that may occur with swelling (inflammation) from arthritis.
  • Cancers that spread to your bones or starts in the bones.
  • Osgood-Schlatter disease.
  • Infection in the bones of the knee.
  • Infection in the knee joint.

Some knee injury causes of knee pain:

 

According to Arthritis Foundation the following are some common knee injury

 

  • Meniscal Injuries: When the knee is bent or twisted.
  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament and Posterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries: A sudden twisting motion or change in direction.
  • Tendon Injuries: It can result if you overwork or over-stretch your tendon.
  • Bursitis: Small fluid-filled sacs that normally cushion the knee and reduce friction between the joint and surrounding ligaments and tendons.
  • Loose bodies: If pieces of bone or joint cartilage to break off into the joint space.
  • Osgood-Schlatter disease: This condition causes repetitive stress on the upper area of the tibia, where the bone is growing.
  • Dislocated kneecap: When an injury causes the patella, or kneecap, to move out of position.
  • Iliotibial band syndrome: when a band of tissue rubs against the outer portion of your femur (thigh bone), causing sharp, burning pain on the outer side of the knee.
  • Plica syndrome: when bands of synovial tissue, called plica, are irritated by overuse or injury.



 

Knee pain home remedy

 

If your knee pain just starts and is not severe, you can:

 

  • Rest and avoid activities that cause pain. Avoid putting weight on your knee.
  • First, apply ice every hour for 15 minutes ( 2 ). After the first day, apply it at least 4 times/ day. Before applying ice, cover your knee with a towel. DO NOT fall asleep while applying ice. You can leave it for long time and get frostbite.
  • To bring down any swelling, keep your knee raised as much as possible.
  • Wear an elastic bandage or elastic sleeve. This might be reduced swelling and provide support.
  • You can take ibuprofen (Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) for pain and swelling. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) could be helped relieve pain, but not swelling. Talk to your doctor before taking these medicines if you have medical problems.
  • Sleep with a pillow between your knees.



Tips to help relieve and prevent knee pain:

 

  • Always warm up yourself before exercising and cool down yourself after exercising. Stretch the muscles in the front of your thigh and in the back of your thigh.
  • Avoid running down hills, walk down instead.
  • Bicycle or swim is better yet instead of run.
  • Reduce the amount of exercise.
  • Run on a smooth and soft surface, instead of on cement or pavement.
  • Lose weight if you are overweight. Every pound that you are overweight puts about five extra pounds of pressure on your kneecap when you go up and down stairs.
  • If you have flat feet, try special shoe inserts and arch supports (orthotics).
  • Make sure your running shoes have good cushioning, fit well.

 

When to Contact a Doctor

 

Call your doctor if:

 

  • You can’t bear weight on your knee.
  • You have pain even when not bearing weight.
  • If knee buckles, clicks, or locks.
  • The knee deforms or misshapen.
  • You can’t flex your knee nor have trouble straightening it all the way out.
  • Have been fevered, redness, or warmth around the knee, or a lot of swelling.
  • You have pain you have swelling, numbness, tingling, or bluish discoloration in the calf below the sore knee.
  • Still, have been pained after three days of home treatment.

 

Exercises to Strengthen the Knee and Relieve Pain

 

Research shows that exercises can help reduce the risk of knee osteoarthritis and its progression and reduce pain.  Exercise could be helpful for other forms of arthritis, too, because it strengthens the muscles that support the joint. Proper exercise also may reduce the risk of a knee injury and, if you need knee surgery, it will make recovery easier.

Knee Pain Diagnosis

 

Your doctor will perform a physical exam, and look at your knees, hips, legs, and other joints.

 

Your doctor may do the following tests:

 

  • X-ray
  • MRI of the knee if a ligament, meniscus tear could be the cause
  • CT scan of the knee
  • Joint fluid culture: fluid is taken from the knee and examined under a microscope
  • Your doctor may be injected a steroid into your knee to reduce pain and inflammation.



  • You needed to learn stretching and to strengthen exercises. You also may need to see a podiatrist to be fitted for orthotics.

 

  • In some cases, you may need surgery.
